Frequently Asked
Questions

Our Materials & Quality

What type of silver do you use?

We exclusively use Solid Sterling Silver (925) and Argentium Silver (935). Unlike silver-plated items which have a thin coating that wears away, our jewellery is solid metal throughout. We source all our precious metals from reputable UK suppliers, primarily a historic gold and silver merchant based in Birmingham.

What is the difference between Sterling and Argentium Silver?

Argentium 935 is a premium silver alloy. It is purer than standard Sterling Silver and contains germanium, which gives it a whiter, brighter finish. Argentium is highly resistant to tarnish and firescale, making it more durable and lower maintenance for daily wear.

Is your jewellery hallmarked?

Yes. In accordance with the UK Hallmarking Act 1973, all our jewellery is independently tested and hallmarked to guarantee its purity. This applies to all Sterling Silver items weighing over 7.78g and Gold items over 1g.

What is "Gold Filled" jewellery?

Gold filled (also known as "rolled gold") is a high-quality alternative to solid gold. It is created by mechanically bonding a thick layer of gold to a base metal, usually brass. To be classified as gold filled, the gold layer must be at least 1/20th of the total weight. It is significantly thicker and more durable than gold plating and will not rub off or tarnish easily.

I have a nickel allergy; can I wear your jewellery?

Our jewellery is nickel-free and safe for most people with metal sensitivities. We work only with solid silver, solid gold, or gold-filled metals and do not use stainless steel or cheap base-metal alloys.

Custom Orders & Services

Is your jewellery handmade?

The vast majority of our collection is handcrafted in our Cheshire based studio. While we source some small functional components like earring backs or chains, we clearly state when an item is not fully handmade by us. Because each piece is made to order, our lead times are slightly longer than mass-produced high-street brands.

Do you take commissions or custom orders?

Yes! We love creating bespoke pieces, typically focusing on customisations of our existing styles or unique designs in our signature aesthetic. Please note we have a strict policy against copying the work of other designers or large brands.

Can you make wedding or engagement rings?

We offer beautiful wedding bands in both Silver and Gold. For engagement rings, we specialise in "alternative" styles. We do not currently work with diamonds or high-value precious stones, but we are happy to discuss designs featuring unique semi-precious stones or metal-focused bands.

Do you offer repairs or engraving?

e provide repair and engraving services exclusively for jewellery created by The Wandering Silversmith. We do not offer repairs for third-party jewellery or professional valuations.

Sizing & Care

How do I find my ring size at home?

If you cannot visit a local jeweller, you can measure your finger using a strip of non-stretchy paper.

  1. Wrap the strip snugly around the base of the finger where the ring will sit.

  2. Mark the point where the paper overlaps and measure the length in millimetres.

  3. Contact us with this measurement to determine your size.

What if I order the wrong size?

We can usually adjust rings by half a size to a full size, provided the design does not have intricate detailing or a set stone. Please reach out via our contact form to discuss resizing options.

Can I wear my jewellery in the shower or pool?

To keep your jewellery looking its best, we recommend removing it before contact with water, particularly chlorinated pools or saltwater. While solid silver may tarnish over time, it can be easily restored using a professional polishing cloth.

Shopping & Shipping

Where can I buy your jewellery in person?

We regularly host pop-up shops at markets and events across the North West of England. You can find a full list of our upcoming dates and locations on our Where To Find Us page. We accept both cash and card payments at our physical events.

How much does shipping cost and how long does it take?

Postage is calculated at checkout based on your order. Because our items are handmade to order, we cannot offer next-day shipping. An estimated delivery date will be provided once your order is placed. Currently, we only ship to addresses within the United Kingdom.

What is your return policy?

As each piece is handcrafted specifically for you, we can only accept returns or offer full refunds if the item is faulty or there is an issue with the order. If you encounter a problem, please contact us immediately via our online form.
